EPU Affinity Group
Together, the members of E Pluribus Unum (EPU) will educate themselves and others in the depth and breadth of the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and other documents and principles constituting the foundations of the United States of America. For those of us who serve or who have served in the military, we seek to garner a deeper appreciation for the Oath of Office that we took when we entered the Academy as cadets and that we took again upon our commissioning as officers in the U.S. military. The Oath of Office is the final rite of passage for those who would aspire to join the venerable ranks of officers serving in our nation's defense forces. In this Oath, you "solemnly swear (or affirm) that [you] will support and defend the Constitution of the United States."
So here's a question: What does it mean to "support and defend the Constitution"? Wouldn't that be a good thing to know before you give your solemn word that you'll do just that? Whether we have a military background or not, understanding the same oath taken by our elected leaders to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies—foreign and domestic—will help us understand their responsibilities to us, especially in light of current debate over Constitutional questions. Our examination will include how we are to support the rule of law, due process of law, and equal protection of our rights under law and how a correct understanding of the foundations of our Nation speak to the critical issues of our day.
